Petition updateTiny House Appendix: Act 2Why I’m All In on Movable Tiny Homes

We just passed 8,000 signatures — thank you! That’s 8,000 voices saying movable tiny homes deserve recognition as a legal dwellings. Let’s keep the momentum going and reach 15,000.

Here’s a little of my story:

Sometimes an idea doesn’t just occur to you — it chooses you. That’s how I feel about my movable tiny home. The idea to build it rescued me. It gave me focus while I rebuilt the rubble of my life after chasing the American Dream and failing hard. It gave me safety while I found my footing. Eventually, it connected me to a perfect partner (and soon after, two amazing kids!). And it gave me all of you — a community united by one “crazy” idea that actually solves more problems than it creates.

My family and I have lived in our movable tiny house for 14 years now. In that time, I estimate we’ve saved over $200,000 in mortgage or rent payments — not to mention utilities. That savings has allowed me to step away from work I did just to pay bills and instead choose meaningful work. That shift has made all the difference in our lives.

We are living proof that tiny houses improve quality of life. Not all of us want to keep up with the Joneses. Some of us just want space to live simply and do meaningful things — and the world should make room for that, too.

Movable Tiny homes can be a stepping stone, a landing pad, or a long-term life choice. But until they are recognized in the International Residential Code (IRC), they’ll remain on the margins. We know they can be built safely — we’ve proven it. Now it’s time for the code to catch up and make space for movable tiny homes.

That’s why I’ve invested $4,000 of my own savings to bring in top building code experts, and another $3,000 to bring my family to the hearing next month, where we’ll testify on the need for recognition. And just to be clear: I stand to gain nothing personally. My home is already legal. I don’t build or sell tiny houses. I’m doing this because I believe it’s the right thing to do — and because I want others to have access to the same freedom tiny living gave me. This is code language for tiny house dwellers, by tiny house dwellers.

We’ve come this far together. Let’s keep going. Please share this petition with your networks and help us reach 15,000 signatures. Every share, every voice, and every signature matters. Together we can show it’s time to make movable tiny homes a recognized, legal housing option.

This idea doesn’t just belong to me. It’s not reserved for the lucky few who can find a way — it belongs to all of us. With your support, we’re giving it the chance it deserves.
