"Dear Mr. Eagen,
Thank you for reading my letter written on behalf of Tina Talbot.
Tina Talbot is the victim of 20+ years of domestic violence. She is not a criminal and does not belong in prison.
Acts of self defense, such as the one Tina undertook for the protection of her young, special needs son and herself, should not be criminalized. Tina is apologetic and plans to seek intensive therapy to help heal her deep wounds.
The following statement was taken directly from the state of Michigan’s court documents regarding Tina’s case. “The police investigation disclosed that at the time of her arrest on September 14, 2018, she had suffered serious emotional and physical abuse at the hands of the decedent. That was objectively confined by the photographs that were taken of Ms. Talbot at the time of her arrest. Those photographs showed a battered and beaten woman. Her subsequent hospitalization revealed a broken arm, several broken ribs, lungs that were partially collapsed, and a spleen that was lacerated.” The evidence is clear. Tina suffered severe emotional and physical abuse for more than 20 years.
Tina’s son desperately needs his mother. His special needs are verified and his primary caregiver has always been his mother. His health and her ability to provide for his special needs are serious matters. Further trauma serves no good.
Tina’s situation has garnered support from around the globe, including more than 220,000 signatures on a change.org petition all urging Governor Whitmer to release Tina from prison as well as international media coverage. The state of Michigan can do better and must re-examine it’s archaic laws.
