Thank you for signing the petition initiated by 25 prominent members of 11 trade unions. Over 800 people have signed the call for urgent action to establish a new workers’ party, but there is potential for many more.
The aim now is to increase the number of signatories from trade unionists at every level of our movement, thereby strengthening the ongoing campaigns within various unions for independent working-class political action. We hope to contribute to an even broader discussion in the weeks ahead.
The results of the May elections revealed a profound alienation of working-class voters from establishment politics, with Reform currently being the chief beneficiary. Next May’s elections will be considerably larger, and if we are to avoid right-wing populism becoming more deeply entrenched, an urgent anti-austerity political response from the trade union movement will be necessary.
Could you please help by forwarding the petition link to colleagues via email, WhatsApp, X, or Facebook so that they can sign online at https://www.change.org/TradeUnions-LaunchANewParty?
A paper version for use at meetings, demonstrations, and similar events is also available at https://www.tusc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Petition-template.pdf.
Do you know of any networks or groups—for instance, local union branches or trade union councils—that might be interested in hosting a discussion on the necessity for a new party? If so, please encourage them to contact me at dave@nellist.net.
Thank you for your support, and I will be in touch again in the coming days with further updates about the campaign for the trade unions to take the lead in building a new working-class party.
Solidarity,
Dave Nellist
