La causa

In New York State, the crucial role of school nurses is often undervalued. Despite their critical role in safeguarding student health and facilitating a safe learning environment, school nurses frequently face discrepancies in salary that do not reflect their significance or the demanding nature of their work. Currently, the salaries of school nurses are left to the discretion of individual school districts, leading to significant pay disparities for professionals performing the same duties across the state.

This issue has very personal ramifications for those in the profession. Many school nurses, like myself, are drawn to the job because of a passion for child welfare and community health. Yet, the financial realities can be disheartening and far from what one might expect with a registered nurse's experience and responsibilities. We are not merely caretakers; we are health educators, emergency responders, and vital links between children's health and their academic success.

According to the New York Statewide School Health Services Center, school nurses manage a broad spectrum of health issues, from chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes to emergencies such as allergic reactions or injuries. Studies consistently show that the presence of a school nurse enhances student attendance and well-being, which is essential for productive learning.

Despite this, compensation does not align with state-registered nurse (RN) salary standards. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for RNs in New York State is approximately $83,000, yet many school nurses are paid significantly less.

We propose the state take immediate action to integrate RN salary standards into the pay structure for school nurses statewide. This would entail implementing a minimum salary base that parallels state RN averages, reflecting the critical role these professionals play in our public schools and ensuring equitable compensation for their essential services.

The benefits of aligning salaries with state RN standards are manifold. It would not only ensure fair pay and help attract more qualified professionals into school nursing, but it would also affirm the state's commitment to student health and educational equity. With fair and competitive wages, we can retain talented health professionals within the school setting.

We urge Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature to prioritize the establishment of a statewide minimum salary standard for school nurses. By taking this critical step, we can honor the invaluable contributions school nurses make and ensure every student in New York has access to the health services they deserve.
