Stop feeding the lorikeets!

Thunderbird Park on Gold Coast's Tamborine Mountain organises daily feedings of wild lorikeets living in the vicinity. Each day at 2pm they are fed with a bread and water mix, a completely inappropriate diet for these nectar, pollen and fruit eating birds.

There is no doubt that the bread leads to diseases and overweight, but because of their lazy nature they actually rather eat lots of ready-made bread than small amounts of pollen and nectar. This also leads to a reduced pollination of flowers and trees in the area, thus having a negative effect on the environment.

Even though the birds are free, they are still being exploited. The park profits from feeding these birds with the cheapest food there is. This way they don't spend much money, but because the feeding is advertised, lots of people come to the park to feed the birds by hand and spend money at the restaurant or the different activities.

The park obviously doesn't care about the birds' health. Also because visitors can feed the birds by hand, they have contact with lots of germs from the visitors hands. Although there is a sign that tells people to wash their hands before feeding, barely anyone does, and staff couldn't care less.

All the lorikeet food available for purchase, even when labelled as a "completely balanced diet", contains huge amounts of cereals and other unhealthy ingredients. There is no way anyone can provide these birds with an appropriate diet, so please stop harming the lorikeets, don't feed them!
