Petition updateThis government must carry out a FULLY TRANSPARENT INVESTIGATION into the Grenfell tragedyOver two weeks on from the Grenfell disaster. IS THIS REALLY GOOD ENOUGH?

On Thursday morning Prime Minister Theresa May appointed judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick to head the public inquiry into the Grenfell tower tragedy. After speaking to local residents that morning, Moore-Bick then expressed his doubts to the media about whether he could meet the requirements of the community - to examine the SYSTEMIC AND POLITICAL FAILURES that led to this tragedy happening in the first place. For an inquiry of such grave national importance, with serious implications for the many thousands of people living in social housing blocks across the UK, there is currently great risk that the community around Grenfell is not being listened to by the government. This is simply not good enough. The government has stumbled repeatedly in the wake of this tragedy. Many traumatised residents were left for days without shelter and support. It took the PM two disastrous appearances at the Grenfell site before she finally made proper contact with a select group of residents in the comfort of 10 Downing Street. Sadly, the mishandling continues. Just yesterday, Kensington Borough Council tried to ban the media and affected residents from attending a meeting on the premises, showing a fundamental confusion about their responsibility and role as local government. While it is paramount that the government addresses the immediate circumstances of the fire, it is also crucial that a judge is appointed who can inspire the confidence of the Grenfell community and who can head a thorough investigation into how such an unthinkable disaster could take place in one of the country’s richest enclaves. We need to understand WHAT ROLE DEREGULATION PLAYED in this disaster, and WHY previous CORONERS' RECOMMENDATIONS were not listened and adhered to. We must also demand NON-MEANS TESTED FUNDING for the bereaved and survivors so that this inquiry can stand any chance of being effective. WIDE-RANGING and THOROUGH SCRUTINY with TOTAL TRANSPARENCY are what we continue to fight for. Stand with the community of Grenfell to make sure this never happens again.
