The Issue

#Eatandheatcheap is a new campaign aiming to provide a cheaper alternative energy system and food cost to the four million households struggling between a choice of eating and heating – caused by the staggering rise in the cost of living.

It also aims to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of the rise in the cost of living to millions of families across the country.

The increase in the cost of living, caused by inflation, is on the rise as of February 2022 – leaving 4 million British households without heating, in this cold and unforgiving winter.

Figures regarding the cost of living are looking to rise due to inflation being at almost a 30-year high. Currently standing at 5.4%. Expected to rise exponentially.

This has and will leave, a substantial proportion of Britons struggling between a choice of eating or heating – with the devastation being felt by people in all regions across the nation.

Necessities such as food, drink, clothing, and footwear, as well as heating and rent prices, have gone up. Leading to an increase in child poverty amongst our British children – #EatandHeatCheap discovered an estimate of over 4.3 million children living in poverty – a significant percentage of the struggles are caused by the surge in consumer pricing and austerity.

#Eatandheatcheap also places emphasis on £20 weekly cuts for universal credit and working tax credit contributing towards the problem in relation to cost of living. The cuts will see over 400 constituencies face difficulties as one in three working-age families with children suffer.

A couple from Penrhyn, in the Rhona, South Wales, Ed Cuss and Misha Cuss find themselves in a £2000 energy debt. “It got so difficult that we have to pay £20 a week just to stop the debt collectors from knocking on our door,” said Misha.

Like many families, they relied on charities and food banks to fund Christmas.
