They Teach Our Future: Who Protects Their Time?
The Issue
Teachers do more than teach. They shape minds, inspire dreams, and help build our future. But who protects the time they have left for their own lives?
Every day, teachers prepare lessons, assess student learning, manage classrooms, and fulfill responsibilities that help keep schools running. While these responsibilities are part of school life, unnecessary administrative work and repetitive tasks can take valuable time away from what teachers are primarily meant to do—teach and support their students.
Their work matters—but so does their time.
The Department of Education has already introduced policies intended to remove administrative tasks from teachers, rationalize their workload, and streamline school forms and reports. However, having these policies in place is only part of the solution. Their consistent implementation, proper delegation of non-teaching tasks, and sufficient administrative support also matter.
As a student and as the daughter of a public school teacher, I have seen how much time and effort teachers give to their work. But teachers are also people with lives beyond the classroom. They have families to care for, responsibilities to attend to, and time that should allow them to rest and be with the people who matter to them.
Because when the school day ends, a teacher's life does not.
This petition calls for the consistent implementation of existing teacher workload protections, proper delegation of non-teaching tasks, continued reduction of unnecessary paperwork, and adequate administrative support so teachers can focus on teaching while still having reasonable time beyond school.
This is not about asking teachers to do less. It is about making sure that the work they do is worth the time it takes—and that they are not left with too little time for the life they live beyond the classroom.
Teachers dedicate their time to shaping our future. They deserve time to live in the present, too.
