Dear Friend, Three weeks ago, we received news that the family’s refugee case was overturned by USCIS. This was largely due to your support. Hope that a family that has sacrificed so much for the US would not be left behind was rekindled. The family is waiting to be scheduled for medical appointments and for the final steps of the process. To complicate matters, the reinstated travel ban, which suspends the refugee admissions program for 120 days, takes effect tomorrow. At this point, we are unsure as to how the family will be impacted due to parts of the Supreme Court ruling that remain unclear. Immigration lawyers across the country, to include those working on this case, are attempting to gather information from various agencies to determine how the court’s decision will be interpreted and enforced. Even if it is determined that family is not temporarily banned “on paper”, we cannot help but think that the travel ban will delay their case. This is why we cannot stop fighting for this family until they are safe on US soil. Please continue to lobby your representatives to fight for this family. In the next update, we will be sending a Call for Action. We will include a revised template to send to your Members of Congress. Please check out the Veterans For American Ideals (VFAI) blog post linked below that was written by one of the family members who interpreted for the US Army. VFAI is a project of Human Rights First and is a nonpartisan group of veterans who share the belief that America is strongest when its policies and actions match its ideals. VFAI has been a leader in protecting refugees to include those who assisted the US military. They have been behind the fight for this family. Thank you all, and please be on the lookout later this week for our Call for Action.
