CJI B.R. Gavai has referred the Delhi–NCR stray dog matter to a three-judge Supreme Court bench; hearing is slated for tomorrow (Aug 14, 2025).

The referral follows an Aug 11 order by a two-judge bench directing Delhi-NCR to remove all stray dogs from localities within eight weeks and house them in civic-run shelters.

The new bench will comprise Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N.V. Anjaria.

The case was flagged before the CJI due to conflicting directions from different SC benches; Gavai said he would look into it and listed it urgently.

Protests erupted in Delhi against the relocation order, with dog lovers demonstrating at Connaught Place.
