It is almost a year since The Independent’s Final Say campaign began. On 24 July 2018, dismayed at the lack of progress, sceptical that any deal could possibly live up to the billing from the campaign trail, and doubtful that there would be a democratic sign-off despite the promise of a meaningful vote, we called for a referendum on the final terms of Brexit.

You backed us, and through your support, a Final Say referendum is supported by millions, and is certainly a lot more popular than Boris Johnson’s vision of a no-deal Brexit.

It is now more important than ever that we fight for a Final Say. Next week, we will have a new prime minister, and the clear favourite is threatening to suspend parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit if needs be. As our readers learnt on Sunday, that scenario is estimated to cost Britain £22bn a year in bailouts for business. How far we have come from the promises of 2016 and the reassurance that there would be a meaningful vote to seal the nation’s fate.

So, we are doing three things, and we’d love your support, as ever.

We have today launched a new free email service, briefing you on what’s going on in politics. Why? Because it’s hard to find news you can trust, and in our busy lives it’s too easy for hugely important developments to pass us by. There is a whirlwind of news out there, with all kinds of hidden agendas, and the changes taking place in our politics could shape our lives for generations. So let us filter it and deliver it to your inbox each morning. (Have I already mentioned this is free?) Sign up to Inside Politics here.

Second, we’re working with the People’s Vote campaign again to get together, hit the streets and present a united front to tell our politicians that we remain committed to a democratic end to Brexit. There are rallies taking place across the country, and there will be a huge march on Saturday 12 October. These have made enormous impact in winning over political support, and we are closer than ever to winning this right for everyone to get a vote on the outcome – not just the 0.35% of the electorate who get to vote on who’ll be the next prime minister. You can find more information here.

Third, keep spreading this petition! We stopped promoting it when we took a million signatures to Downing Street in December (incidentally, we did not receive so much as a letter or email of acknowledgement from the prime minister, but she can’t claim she didn’t hear our voices!), but now almost 1.3 million have signed. We won’t stop campaigning until we win this for all British voters. And yesterday we took huge encouragement from the words of Ursula von der Leyen, who may well be confirmed as the next European Commission president later today, saying she is keen to offer an extension if there is a “good reason” – like holding a referendum.

So please do share the link, on social media and email and by word of mouth.

We hope you enjoy the Inside Politics email – see you at the rallies and on the march in October.
