What an amazing response – 170,000 signatures, and the petition hasn’t been live yet for a full day. Yesterday, Theresa May suggested that we should feel reassured because Britain is stockpiling blood supplies and drugs. Frankly, we feel more reassured that people are coming together in this campaign, demanding that we settle the decision rather than leaving it to a failing political process. The most encouraging aspect is that people from both sides of the debate are so enthusiastic. This is not a Remain or Leave issue, after all, but a matter of giving the public a voice and continuing the process that was started by the initial referendum in 2016. Many of you got straight to the point quicker and better than we managed to. Saurabh Misra was one of those: “I’m signing this petition because the government has made a miserable hash of Brexit and with zero confidence in parliament rising above its petty politics and doing what’s best for this nation, the final say in Brexit must now return back to the people.” Alex Sigalas wrote that they voted for Brexit, and “since we live in a democracy, we should have the final say on any deal or no deal”, while Judi Little told us: “We now know more about what the whole Brexit thing means and I for one have changed my mind.” Martin Lawrence wrote that he feels “we were not told the truth during the original vote” – a point that was made by many others too. We’ve been asking how big this petition needs to get before it delivers change. The truth is we don’t know… yet. But we can be sure that the more people back this campaign, the more Theresa May will have to listen. So many passionate voices cannot be ignored.
