Hello all 150,636 of you!
This year, women have been breaking out from beneath the shadows, speaking up, shouting out and demanding that our voices are heard. We have stood together and fought together. But period poverty doesn’t seem to be going away. In fact, it’s more prolific than ever before.
Today, the results of a poll were published which discovered that over 137,700 girls in the UK had missed school last year because they couldn’t afford menstrual products. What’s more, 6% of parents admitted to stealing menstrual products for their daughters. This is not only shocking, it’s unacceptable. The government should be ashamed that they have yet to take any decisive action to eradicate period poverty.
#FreePeriods has really been making waves, thanks to all of you. We have been featured in Vogue, the Guardian, Newsweek, Sunday Times and plenty more - this is incredible at helping to raise awareness, but we also need to keep pressuring the government into taking decisive action.
Please write to your local MP to tell them that now is time- it’s so easy if you go to www.writetothem.com.
Girls should never be held back by their periods. Let’s make sure everyone gets the education they deserve.
Thank you!
Amika
