Petition updatePROTECT WICKLESHAM QUARRY FROM DEVELOPMENTWantage Lib Dems: credibility gap widens on environmental claims.

While the Wantage Lib Dem website states that their Parliamentary Spokesman, Alex Meredith, is 'passionate about environmental issues', and claims he is 'campaigning to safeguard our beautiful countryside and protect our environment for future generations', Meredith, who is also a Faringdon Councillor, has admitted that he voted in favour of the Neighbourhood Plan's policy to concrete over Wicklesham Quarry SSSI and Conservation Target Area, and turn it into an industrial/ logistics site.
This policy seeks to exploit the Localism Act by giving the landowner a passport through the planning system for a project that has been rejected by every independent review over the past 7 years, including the Local Plan. Meredith's breath-taking double standards have demolished the political credibility of Wantage Lib Dems, who seek electoral support for Meredith on the basis of his environmental 'passion' and credentials.
Local people fighting to protect Wicklesham Quarry and have it restored in accordance with its planning conditions are asking how 'sustainable' Meredith's position can be in view of this admission. As a lawyer, Meredith failed to question the obvious impropriety of the neighbourhood plan process: that the owners of Wicklesham Quarry were not only given control of employment land policy in order to favour of their own project, and to control the whole process as steering group members, but were even the sources of so-called 'evidence' to justify it! This 'evidence' is nothing other than patently false statistical claims contained in lobbying material produced by the landowners themselves, and rightly rejected by the Vale of White Horse District Council.
That Councillor Meredith could have been unaware of this extraordinary abuse of localism, or not recognized the lack of probity in the neighbourhood plan process, is impossible. For the past 6 months we have been sending him email updates pointing out these obvious problems, which he has failed to acknowledge.
The aspiring MP recently boasted on Facebook: "I'm a natural sceptic. A healthy dose of scepticism seems to me to be the right instinct when it comes to government - parish, district, county, Westminster, EU”.
Really, Alex? So where was this healthy scepticism when it came to challenging an influential local landowner, bent on destroying Faringdon's unique CTA and earth science heritage for personal gain? Faringdon Council's willingness to curry favour with local landowner/ developers has been widely observed. Unfortunately for Wantage Lib Dems, Alex Meredith's desire to court local popularity in relation to this disastrous policy for Wicklesham Quarry calls into question his integrity, independence, & professional competence to stand as an MP.
The Lib Dems may have a vacancy if anyone is interested in applying. References required.
