Wrongful death suit shows pitfalls of IDSA Lyme guidelines

Joseph Elone died of Lyme disease

By Mary Beth Pfeiffer   Sept 9, 2019

https://www.lymedisease.org/elone-wrongful-death-lawsuit-lyme/

Joseph Elone’s fate was decided by a 25-year-old, technically challenging, two-step test that has been documented to fail.

Falsely negative Lyme test

In just under half of cases, one analysis concluded, it comes back negative when the patient is actually infected. It was falsely negative for Joseph Elone.

Dr. Shapiro,

Will you be contacting the New York Times to inform the editors of this tragic case of Lyme disease where a 17 year-old dropped dead in his front yard from this nuisance disease?

17 year-old Joseph Elone did not develop a bulls-eye rash and had a negative antibody test for Lyme disease.

This is a far cry from your recent articles printed in the New York Times and Boston Globe as there is no mention of life-altering/life threatening consequences as a result of untreated Lyme disease.

You did not mention the case of Dr. Neil Spector (professor, Duke University) who required a heart transplant after his Lyme went untreated for four years. His laboratory tests were repeatedly negative for Lyme disease.

Dr. Shapiro, you seemed to have missed the case of Kris Kristofferson:

REVERSIBLE CAUSES OF DEMENTIA AND NORMAL PRESSURE HYDROCEPHALUS

http://danielcameronmd.com/rreversible-causes-of-dementia-and-normal-pressure-hydrocephalus/

Excerpt:

Recent high-profile cases in the news remind us of the need to consider Lyme disease as a possible cause of reversible dementia. For the past several years, legendary singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson was believed to be suffering from Alzheimer's or dementia. However, in the past week we have learned that the musician's memory problems are instead due to undiagnosed and untreated Lyme disease

The Kris Kristofferson article above was written by Dr. Daniel Cameron who you identify poses a threat to public health in your 2011 Lancet Infectious Disease article:

Antiscience and ethical concerns associated with advocacy of Lyme disease.

Auwaerter PG, Bakken JS, Dattwyler RJ, Dumler JS, Halperin JJ, McSweegan E, Nadelman RB, O'Connell S, Shapiro ED, Sood SK, Steere AC, Weinstein A, Wormser GP.

Excerpt:

The relations and actions of some activists, medical practitioners, and commercial bodies involved in Lyme disease advocacy pose a threat to public health.

It is interesting to note that six of the seven coauthors of the Lancet article have been named as defendants in the lawsuit in Texas District Court.

Did you inform the NY Times or Boston Globe that you are a co-defendant in this active lawsuit?

31,400 individuals have signed the petition recognizing that you provide no benefit whatsoever to the Tick-Borne Disease Working Group:

So once again I ask the question Dr. Shapiro, what is your motivation for downplaying the severity of Lyme disease?
