Tell the UK government you want ‘associate EU citizenship’
This petition had 570 supporters
The European Union is backing the ‘associate EU citizenship’ proposal and is taking it to the Brexit negotiation table.
This initiative, launched by MEP Charles Goerens, would allow individual UK nationals to keep their rights following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.
Under the proposals, Britons would have the option of paying a fee in order to retain ‘freedom of movement’ in the EU and a vote in European elections.
EU Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt said he would ensure it is included in the Parliament’s negotiating mandate.
We at the Costa News group - which includes Costa Blanca News, Costa del Sol News, Costa Almería News and Costa Levante News - want the UK government to sign up to the proposal and make clear that they will implement associate EU citizenship for all Britons who want it.
We believe that associate EU citizenship will make life much easier for British expats who live in countries such as Spain once the UK leaves the EU – and will guarantee rights they cannot afford to lose.
As the proposal is discussed and fleshed out by the negotiators, improvements could be considered.
We would remind them that many of the Britons who live in EU countries are pensioners who cannot afford additional stress on their income, which has already taken a hit with the falling value of the pound.
For this reason we would urge the UK and EU authorities to make associate EU citizenship free of charge – or to levy a nominal fee.
