For decades now, the Cypriot community has never been able to escape the intimidating sight on the Pentadakylos mountain range. Since 1983, a break-away state was declared in northern Cyprus and our politicians have worked tirelessly to solve the Cyprus issue.
The flags on Pentadaktylos are provocative and hurtful to the Cypriot community and also impose an environmental hazard. Anyone travelling to our capital, Nicosia, has a full view of the flags, day or night, as it is even lit up at night. This harms moral and damages confidence between the communities of Cyprus. The words "Ne mutlu Türküm diyene", which translate as "How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!" are also spelt out beneath one of the flags.
We would like to see the Turkish administration remove these flags from the mountain range for the greater good of Cyprus and all of it's inhabitants. We believe that the removal of the flags and the words beneath them would be an excellent confidence building measure as we work towards a solution for the island.
