La causa

For an international AI safety agreement—and joint Nobel recognition if it is achieved.

We call on Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to reach a verifiable agreement on AI safety, independent monitoring, and coordinated pacing. If they achieve it, we support their joint nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize by an eligible nominator.

Our aim: international safety, dignity, and flourishing, with AI technology for decades to come.

Why now?

Dario Amodei warns that AI development could outpace our ability to understand and control advanced systems. In an arms race, developers on either side could deploy systems whose behavior they cannot reliably predict, with potential consequences beyond national borders.

Reuters reports that Trump said Xi would visit the United States on September 24, 2026, with AI on the agenda. This is a reported plan. It creates an opportunity to put international cooperation on AI safety at the center of the discussion.

The petition proposes cooperation on pacing, independent monitoring, and shared safeguards, with the aim of enabling AI’s benefits while reducing risks to people everywhere. How an agreement would be verified and enforced remains an open question.

A chance to make history

By reaching a verifiable international AI safety agreement, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping could be remembered as great leaders who protected their people—and helped secure a safer future for all humanity.

Choosing cooperation at this critical moment could become a defining achievement of their leadership: a legacy of safety, dignity, and flourishing for generations to come.

What we’re asking for

Five principles for an international AI safety agreement.

1. Avoid a race that leaves everyone worse off

The United States and China need not stop competing in artificial intelligence in order to agree that neither country benefits from a competition that ends with both less secure. Where competition creates pressure to take risks that neither country would otherwise choose, both sides should look for ways to make mutual restraint possible.

2. Protect human dignity

AI should strengthen human freedom, agency, and dignity—not diminish them. However powerful these systems become, technology should remain in service of human beings and human life.

3. Prioritize breakthroughs in human health and energy abundance over military applications of AI

AI investments should prioritize advances in human health, abundant energy, and better living standards over military uses.

4. Keep humanity in control

As AI systems become more capable, decisions with irreversible or catastrophic consequences should remain subject to meaningful human judgment and responsibility. Neither nation benefits from a world in which humanity loses control of the technologies it creates.

5. Help each other when something goes wrong

The United States and China should have ways to communicate and cooperate immediately when advanced AI creates an unexpected danger—whether from an accident, loss of control, malicious use, or another crisis. In an emergency, preventing catastrophe should come before geopolitical rivalry.
