Coimbatore is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu and the 15th largest urban agglomeration in India with a metropolitan population of over 2 million. The city also houses the state's second largest IT industry after Chennai, is home to a number of industrial establishments, textile units, and heavy engineering units. The city also has a huge student population, consisting of both residents as well as students who come from various parts of India, including but not limited to Chennai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Kolkata, etc. Coimbatore, being a growing city, has a dubious distinction of having less transport infrastructure in comparison to other equivalent cities in Tamil Nadu. As such, the city needs improved transport infrastructure to handle the growth. Majority of any city's traffic consists of private vehicles and with the constant economic growth of our country, this trend will only grow. Therefore, our city's roads become inadequate for the amount of traffic that they carry. No amount of widening, upgrading, of roads or building grade separators will help when the number of vehicles is increasing. Therefore, more emphasis must be laid on providing proper Public Transport to the citizens. Volvo city buses have been in operation in both big cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, as well as relatively smaller cities like Mysore, Pune, Mangalore, etc. Volvo buses are known for their efficiency, comfort and low cost of maintenance and reliability. Coimbatore is putting a heavy amount of stress on its roads with an excess of private vehicles and this can only be helped when people who use their own vehicles are given equally comfortable public transport. Volvo buses can be used as they provide good comfort to the passengers, cheap maintenance to the Corporation and also will be able to match to the city's undulating terrain. Increased use of Public transport will reduce the congestion on the city's road network, resulting in smoother journeys and less pollution in the city. This coupled with really high and unregulated auto fares in the city, make it compelling to introduce these buses.
