Petition updateThe TDSB and YRDSB need to develop an anti-Asian racism action planOn June 20th, Join Us to Voice Your Concerns About Anti-Asian Racism in Public Schools

Jun 16, 2022

Hello everyone,

I'd like to extend a sincere thank you for your signature of support for the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter's education equity campaign this past month - every gesture of support counts, as we continue to voice our concerns surrounding the treatment of East Asian students in the TDSB and YRDSB.

In 2021, anti-Asian racism incident reports from children and youth (aged under 18) represented a 286% increase compared to 2020, with an increased number of incidents happening within schools. (source: covidracism.ca 2021 report)

So far, we have met with one YRDSB trustee, and no TDSB staff or trustees have responded to our calls for community collaboration as of the timing of this post. To enact change, we need more consistent conversations and a stronger commitment from both the TDSB and YRDSB. And that's where you, our community, comes in.

On June 20th from 5-6pm EST, we will be facilitating a phone and email zap. This means we'll be emailing and calling school trustees as a group to:

1) Demand a stronger, board-wide response to anti-Asian racism faced by East Asian elementary and secondary students in the GTA and York region

2) Demand specific action plans targeting East Asian students based on their unique needs, with continuous community involvement

3) Share your personal experiences with anti-Asian racism in TDSB and YRDSB schools, if you have them

Written + spoken scripts and contact information will be provided before and during the event, as well as CCNCTO staff who can support you in crafting your messages. You will also have an opportunity to share your experiences with anti-Asian racism, and connect with each other.

We hope to see you there! If you have any questions about the process, please send them over to executivedirector@ccnctoronto.ca.

Sincerely,
