An open letter of a concerned South African: How the ANC has failed to govern South Africa.
Dear supporter of this petition
Thank you for your unwavering support to stop farm murders in South Africa.
Our petition entitled “STOP FARM MURDERS IN SOUTH AFRICA” now stands at 213,644 signatures and still growing each day.
A few days ago, I received an open letter from a very concerned South African, who does not want to be identified for fear of victimization.
This was communicated to me on WhatsApp.
The letter reads as follows:
“ WHEN WILL SOUTH AFRICANS FINALLY TAKE ACTION?
I won't lie, I am highly frustrated. I happened to be overseas on 11 September 2018 when the SAPS released their crime statistics for 2017/2018 so I just glanced over the numbers via news sites and social media at the time. I am the eternal idealist but when you remind yourself that these numbers represent actual people, it's hard to digest. About two days ago, I decided to download the crime stats from the SAPS website myself and have a look (https://www.saps.gov.za/services/crimestats.php After much thought, I'd like to share my findings and thoughts on where to from here with all of you.
From 1 April 2017 - 31 March 2018, there were:
20,336 murders (55 per day)
40,035 rapes (109 per day)
50,108 sexual offenses (137 per day)
323,595 assaults (878 per day)
16,325 carjackings (44 per day)
299,289 burglaries (819 per day)
Those numbers are seriously high across all categories but one stat really made me think. All crimes carry incredible consequences for the victims but none so more than murder. You can put a gun against my loved one's head to steal his/her phone and I could still see that person tonight but when you actually pull the trigger, there's no going back. When I looked at the number of murders reported in the last ten years, this is what I found:
2008: 18,084 (49 per day)
2009: 16,767 (46 per day)
2010: 15,893 (43 per day)
2011: 15,554 (42 per day)
2012: 16,213 (44 per day)
2013: 17,023 (46 per day)
2014: 17,805 (49 per day)
2015: 18,673 (51 per day)
2016: 19,016 (52 per day)
2017: 20,336 (55 per day)
If I'm honest with myself and everyone else, these numbers and the others I haven't posted just aren't acceptable. As citizens, we can't be apathetic or unambitious for change. It's with this in mind that I'd like to share some of my thoughts with you:
1. THE ANC HAS FAILED US
Regardless of race, we have to acknowledge that the ANC has let us down as the governing body of South Africa and custodians of our safety as citizens. At what point do we hold our government accountable for these statistics? If you want to know how much a country can suffer when it is void of good leadership, all you have to do is look at these crime stats.
In the last 10 years, the ANC allowed and even enabled Zuma to loot our country. As my friend Graeme Codrington said the other day, the ANC knew for many years who this man was and what he was doing. Zuma’s genius was to enrich many people along the way. And every single one of those people just let him do it. Even those who spoke out did so very quietly, until now when it’s safe to be louder. The ANC is to blame here. I absolutely do not understand how anyone can vote for them, if they just think about it. I understand that voters might feel there are no good alternatives, but we need to grow up and become a more mature democracy. This means not waiting for the perfect alternative, but rather voting for the best worst option and giving someone else a chance if you feel the ruling party has failed you.
2. I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE LEAVE SA
Some won't like this statement but the fact is, people don't want to permanently be looking over their shoulders. And when you have kids, you really do want the best for them and part of that intention is wanting to raise them in a safe and peaceful environment. 10 years is a long time for these stats to continue to get worse so at what point does the average person's patience wear thin? If you do decide to leave, I totally understand. Life is too short to become a potential statistic.
3. MORE THAN ANYTHING, WE NEED ACTIVE CITIZENS
If you stay in South Africa then I believe you have an absolute moral duty to become an active citizen and help bring about change. I don't care what you do but you have to be doing something every day. The conundrum we all face is that if we focus on those stats for too long, we become disgruntled and disillusioned. While I am deeply saddened by the numbers, it makes me want to play my part more than ever in helping change the country for the better.
I believe it's a tiny portion of the population who is causing mass chaos for everyone else and the bad guys rely on us doing nothing. But the day we all realize the numbers is the day that things can change. And please don't think for a minute that I am simply trying to inspire you but rather look to the logic of my argument. If you decide to stay in SA, the action that makes the least sense is doing nothing to help. On the converse, the most appropriate action is getting involved in making a difference. All you're doing at the end of the day is making your life better as a result.
All I know is this, as a South African citizen, I don't like these stats and I'm going to do something about it. I hope you join me!”
LET US ALL BECOME ACTIVISTS READY TO CHANGE SOUTH AFRICA FOR THE GOOD.
