Please Fund Friday Summer School for Low-Income Students!

Homelessness is a big issue in Utah. Signing this petition will help address a cause of homelessness. A critical Salt Lake City program for disadvantaged children doesn’t cover the full work week, forcing parents to choose between keeping a job and making sure their kids are safe.
My name is Marcus and I’m a 7th grader at West High School in Salt Lake City. An assignment in one of my classes, “Utah Studies,” is to try to make Utah a better place. I decided reducing homelessness is a great way to do that. A family friend who works with the homeless said this is a big problem that could be easily remedied.
There are far too many homeless families in Utah. 35 percent of the homeless in Utah are families, according to the state Department of Workforce Services. There were over 897 homeless kids enrolled in school in Utah in 2015, according to the Utah State Office of Education.
It is nearly impossible for a homeless parent to find and keep a job when they have to watch their kids. Fortunately, summer school is incredibly cheap or even free for disadvantaged kids. Summer school is offered by the Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) and price reductions are available for people who have smaller incomes.
Unfortunately, SLCSD Summer School is not available on Fridays, which means that low-income parents threatened by homelessness cannot work that day. This makes it much more likely that they will not be able to find/keep a job and move out of the shelter, or that they will lose their jobs and have to move to the shelter.
Ask the Salt Lake City School District Board to fund Friday Summer School.
