This petition is regarding the case of Tara Hudson, a 26-year-old from Bath. Tara Hudson is currently serving a 12-week sentence for common assault at HMP Bristol, a prison for male offenders. According to news reports, Tara Hudson is seeking to serve their sentence at a female prison because Tara Hudson identifies as female. We the undersigned ask you to take note of the following: 1. Tara Hudson is legally male. 2. Tara Hudson has male genitalia. 3. Sex-segregation in prisons exists for the safety and protection of women, who would otherwise be at risk of rape and other forms of violence. The argument for moving Tara Hudson to a female prison appears to be that, because of Tara Hudson's appearance, they are at risk of violence from inmates in a male prison. Respectfully, please take into consideration the following: 1. All vulnerable men - including gay men and/or gender non-conforming men - are at risk of violence in prison. 2. Women prison inmates cannot be made more vulnerable than they already are. Having a male or males placed within female prisons wholly defeats the object. Sex segregation exists for a reason. 3. The safety and protection of males cannot come at the expense of the safety and protection of females. This would not reflect a society which values the sexes equally. We call upon The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP and the Ministry of Justice to ensure that Tara Hudson, a male person, serves his sentence in a male prison. To do otherwise would be to take action which endangers women and/or sets a dangerous precedent.
