Theni is a District Headquarters with numerous schools, colleges and temples in and around it. It is also an agricultural valley, with tourist spots in and around it. It had a railway line connecting Madurai and Bodinayakanur. 

With the decision to convert the meter gauge into broad gauge for better rail connectivity, Madurai Division of Southern Railways had stopped the train service and closed traffic in this section in December 2010.

The Railway Board had announced that the work will commence from 2011.

A project report was prepared at an estimated cost of Rs.180 Crore.

 

Yet, there has been no progress in enabling rail transport to Theni. Theni acts as a commercial hub with its agriculture related and agricultural productions. Hundreds of students, farmers, officers and tourists travel from and  to Theni everyday. Their only mean of transport for the past five years is road. This has to change.

With increasing bus fare and for the welfare of the inhabitants of Theni, its high time that the Ministry of Railways interferes in this issue and establish rail transport to Theni at the earliest.
