The Issue
We, the members of the block association, SPaCE, along with other residents and citizens of our community are vehemently opposed to any more bus permits in our neighborhood. The private bus system in Chinatown has created a de facto bus depot. Under siege, our neighborhood has exceeded saturation with intercity stops. There seems to be no end in sight.
Our complaints and grievances are genuine:
-Endangering the welfare of children and the elderly via impassable sidewalks and transportation operations
-Endangering the welfare of local residents due to the increase in home and building break ins
-Endangering local businesses due to grab and ride thefts and customer harassment
-Lack of infrastructure to adequately provide patrons bathrooms and shelter
-Lack of infrastructure to quickly and economically move the patrons on to their final destination
-Increased noise pollution
-Increased air pollution
-Increased general refuse
-Sidewalks clogged with people and their cargo
-Idling busses
-Unsafe working conditions for drivers
-Potential OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) violations
-Human Trafficking
Did you know…?
…There are currently 8 bus stops within the 1 block area around 50 Canal Street
…4 stops located on the corner of Allen Street and Canal Street and 3 (including the new application) at 59 Canal Street.
…Recent High Profile Incidents
-the LARGEST illegal arms bust in NYC history occurred on a Chinatown Private Bus in August 2013: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/19/gunrunners-ny-smuggled-on-buses/2671421/
-Chinatown buses’ death rate is 7x that of competitors: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-31/chinatown-buses-death-rate-said-seven-times-that-of-competitors.html
…PS 2 – Meyer London elementary school is located at 122 Henry Street
…PS 42 – Benjamin Altman elementary School is located at 71 Hester Street
…Best Adult Day Care Center is located at 2 Allen Street
Our neighborhood has been abused long enough.
