"For most of its history the Pritzker, the highest honor in the field, has also only recognized men. The myth of the lone genius even obscured highly visible women: In 1991, the foundation gave the prize to Robert Venturi, omitting his partner Denise Scott Brown.

“My ideas went where I couldn’t go,” Brown told Carolina A. Miranda in a 2013 interview. “My ideas were credited, but they were credited to Bob.”

In some ways, the organization has taken these criticisms on board. Zaha Hadid was the first woman to win the award, in 2004. A few years before that, the Pritzker recognized both Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for the work of their eponymous firm. The foundation continues to acknowledge studio founders — Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal won as a pair in 2021 — without rewarding the larger firm as a whole.

Now there’s a darker cloud hanging over the prize."
