Constitution of Pakistan 27 (1) ‘No citizen otherwise qualified for appointment in the service of Pakistan shall be discriminated against in respect of any such appointment on the ground only of race, religion, caste, sect, residence or place of birth.’

By the removal of Dr Atif Mian from the Economic Advisory Council due to his Ahmedi status, the Government of Pakistan has violated the constitution. In bowing down to pressure from religious extremists the citizenry has been told clearly and unequivocally who is really in charge.

It is no secret that Pakistan’s economy is in crisis. There is a shortfall in every sector ultimately affecting the food security and right to life of millions of Pakistanis of all denominations. We have been led to believe that the new committees formulated to address this and to find solutions consist of independent, highly qualified individuals who are in fact the best persons for the job. The removal of Dr Atif Mian from the Economic Advisory Council just days after his appointment is a clear indication that our elected government places greater importance on placating a virulent minority than it does on the economic and existential survival of 200 million Pakistanis.

We the undersigned demand that the Prime Minister of Pakistan reinstate Dr Atif Mian to the Economic Advisory Council, and provide the security now needed to ensure that Dr Atif Mian can serve the Pakistani people with out let, hindrance and fear for his life.
