INDIA NEEDS A COMMON CIVIL CODE
INDIA NEEDS A COMMON CIVIL CODE
The Issue
The Constitution of India calls for a Uniform (Common) Civil Code as per Article 44 of the Directive principles of the Constitution specifying, "The State shall endeavour to secure for citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India"
India is a secular country and being a secular country, our nation needs to have Common Criminal Laws and a Common Civil Code for ensuring equitable justice to each and every citizen of this country irrespective of Caste, Religion, Region, Language and Sex, without infringing on the fundamental rights of every citizen to practice religion-specific rituals and customs at their worshipping places and rituals at functions like birth, marriage, death etc. While there is a Common Criminal law which is applicable for every citizen in place, it is highly regrettable that the Common Civil Code has not yet been implemented even almost 67 years after India became an independent, democratic secular republic in January, 1950.
We the undersigned feel it is essencial to have common civil and criminal laws applicable for every citizen to ensure unity, integrity and secular status of this great nation, and appeal to the government of India to frame and implement the Uniform Civil code without procrastination.
