Christopher Bartolo is asking bail from the President according to art 574(2) of the Criminal Code on humanitarian grounds. He had filed a constitutional case before the criminal case was decided. The Criminal Court condemned him to five years imprisonment and he filed an appeal which is still pending.
In the meantime the Constitutional Court decided that judgment should be annulled and a re-trial ordered. In the meantime Chris serves a punishment which could be declared null.
His already precarious health condition continues to deteriorate. Release Christopher Bartolo on bail pending his appeals. Continued detention could mean further breaches of fundamental human rights. His right to bail especially in his precarious state of health.
Thus we are asking the President of the Republic to show compassion and justice in this humanitarian case and grant him bail pending proceedings.
