Calling On The Oireachtas To Declare A Referendum On The 27th Amendment
Calling On The Oireachtas To Declare A Referendum On The 27th Amendment
The Issue
The 27th amendment of the constitution of Ireland (Bunreacht na hEireann) states that a child born in the island of Ireland who does not, at the time of their birth, have at least one parent who is an Irish citizen or entitled to Irish citizenship is not necessarily entitled to Irish citizenship, meaning that this child could be deported. We believe that the deportation of children (the definition of “child” that we are using here is a person under 18 years of age) is immoral and that this amendment violates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Ireland Ratified in September 1992
