Petition updateTHE MDC Commission needs to act. The fire has proven us right. MOVE THE PLANT OUT.SITE FOR NEW COVANTA FACILITY IDENTIFIED OUTSIDE DORAL

Dear Residents,

Here is an update on the proposed replacement of the Covanta waste-to-energy (WTE) facility.

On May 3rd, the County Commission voted to approve an amended Resolution to build a new WTE facility in Doral, which added the language - “or a similar site, that meets all the land use, zoning and permitting requirements”. Since then, our biggest concern has been whether a site outside Doral could be located and, if so, would the County leaders realistically consider it.

Through our efforts, the Coalition obtained correspondence from the Mayor for the TOWN OF MEDLEY to the attention of County Mayor Daniella Levin Cava. In his letter dated May 3, 2022, Mayor Martell tells Mayor Levin Cava that Medley HAS AVAILABLE SITES THAT MEET THE LAND USE, ZONING, AND PERMITTING requirements. He goes on to express that the Town is ready to work with the County in the site selection process. Below is a copy of this letter.

This is a real opportunity for us! Mayor Levin Cava must veto any decision by the County Commission to make Doral the site for this new WTE Facility. She has openly expressed commitment to finding a new location for the site and we are very encouraged by her representations. County Commissioners also need to be informed. Doral does not want this Facility and yet Medley does. In fact, Medley’s proposed location is SUPERIOR to the Covanta site in Doral. Medley’s location, on the other hand, has been thoughtfully planned out as a major Miami Energy Complex with plenty of space to meet the County’s needs for decades to come. Located to the north in Medley, when the wind blows west, there is no residential presence whatsoever and no Miami Dade resident has to suffer what Doral is going through. From a logistical and monetary perspective, even the close proximity between the proposed Medley location and the County’s main landfills is perfect. For all of Miami Dade County, this is a win-win.

Even with this development, nothing is guaranteed at this point – So, we MUST remain motivated and unified. PLEASE TAKE ACTION and email Mayor Levin Cava and all 13 Commissioners, to insist the new WTE Facility is built in Medley and away from Doral.

Please send your emails to Mayor Levin-Cava: Mayor@MiamiDade.gov, and CC all Commissioners at District1@miamidade.gov, District2@miamidade.gov, District3@miamidade.gov, District4@miamidade.gov, District5@miamidade.gov, District6@miamidade.gov, District7@miamidade.gov, District8@miamidade.gov, District9@miamidade.gov, District10@miamidade.gov, District11@miamidade.gov, District12@miamidade.gov, District13@miamidade.gov, and us at doralcommunitycoalition@gmail.com, as well as the Director of the County’s Ethics Commission, jose.arrojo@miamidade.gov and ethics@miamidade.gov.

Sincerely,

IVETTE
