PETITION TO BAN LOUD AND EXPLOSIVE FIREWORKS IN MAURITIUS

PETITION TO BAN LOUD AND EXPLOSIVE FIREWORKS IN MAURITIUS
The Issue
Hon. Prime Minister,
We are petitioning to urge the Government to ban loud and explosive fireworks and to regulate the use of fireworks in Mauritius.
Fireworks have become a tradition in Mauritius starting from Christmas until several days after the New Year. Some people may enjoy creating a ruckus with fireworks but animals - including domesticated pets - can become traumatized by repeated loud explosions that occur over several days. The same is applicable to the sick and vulnerable people.
Because most animals are more far more sensitive to noise than humans, "acoustic stress" caused by loud fireworks can cause several complications to animal health, including heart problems, nausea, tremors, debilitating fears, and light-headedness. Not mentioning the stress and anxiety caused to pet owners.
Mauritius has recently taken a bold step to fight pollution and to protect our environment by banning the use of plastic bags despite the inconvenience caused to consumers. There is no reason why loud fireworks cannot be banned since it confers no advantage whatsoever on the population.
We urge the government to follow the footsteps of the Italian town of Collechio which has passed legislation allowing only the use of silent fireworks in order to protect animals and the vulnerable.
We sincerely hope that you will give our petition your highest consideration and that necessary action will be taken to protect our little paradise and all its inhabitants.
