Review of the Management and Governance of the Addison Road Centre

The Management and Governance of the Addison Road Centre for arts, culture, community and environment (ARC) has deteriorated to a point of extreme crisis.

This important community resource could be lost to future generations if falling standards of management, disregard for the centre's constitution, suspect financial practices and the persecution of any group that speaks out against the board’s direction are not addressed.

Such practices have been rife in recent years and have intensified in recent months with concerted efforts from the centre management to illegally evict or intimidate into leaving any members or tenants who have spoken out about mismanagement, corruption or questioned the lack of a transparent process about decisions.

Since 1976, the Centre has provided a home for culture, arts, environment and community groups. It is Australia’s largest not-for-profit community centre, with members and tenants including childcare centres, arts and environmental groups and a Sunday market that regularly draws crowds of more than 3,000 local residents and people from around Sydney.

However we - ARC members, tenants and members of the local and wider community who use and value the centre - fear that without an external and independent review to rectify what the City Hub local newspaper recently described as “a culture of intimidation” that includes “nepotism and obscene mismanagement which have created a toxic atmosphere” that this valuable community resource could come under threat and operate in a manner counter to the values and purpose it was established to fulfill.

We the undersigned petitioners call upon the Minister for Primary Industries, and Minister for Small Business to urgently institute a Review of the Management and Governance of the Addison Road Centre for Arts, Culture, Community and Environment Ltd. We ask for the appointment of an administrator with the objective of making recommendations to the Minister about the future governance of the Addison Road Centre.

We urge you to take action now. Any delay will allow the intimidation and inept management to continue.
