Melbourne is widely recognised as the Live Music Capital of Australia and as one of the leading music cities in the world. But how can we celebrate and promote this status in a simple yet powerful way? By turning every new car registered in Victoria into a mini-billboard spreading a positive message: Victoria, The Live Music State
Do you, as a Victorian, share a sense of pride that Melbourne now has a reputation as one of the world’s great music cities?
Music – from dance to rock to country to classical – impacts everyone’s lives positively. Music is something that appeals to all generations, whether they prefer a musical, the opera, a regional festival, or a local gig.
Music Victoria’s 2012 study found that live music contributes more than $1 billion a year to the Victorian economy. In an international study (The Mastering Of A Music City, IFPI/Music Canada/Midem) released in June 2015, Melbourne was named alongside Austin, Berlin, London, Montreal and New York as one of the leading music cities in the world. And we deserve to be proud of that.
At the 2014 Face The Music conference, on a panel discussing Music In Melbourne City’s DNA, music venue owner and booker James Young raised the issue of Victoria’s number plates and writer Kaye Blum approached him about starting this campaign. Here’s why…
The current slogan is Stay Alert, Stay Alive. The premier, The Hon. Daniel Andrews, MP, has proposed to change this to The Education State.
While we are extremely grateful for Labor's pre-election promise to commit $22.2 million to the Victorian music industry over four years, we believe Premier Andrews needs to re-consider his proposed slogan.
What is the purpose of the number plate slogan – to reflect the identity of our state? To reduce the road toll? To capture the spirit of the state? To appeal to tourists? To imbue a sense of pride?
What would international and interstate tourists think about a holiday or short break in The Education State? Or the state where you have to Stay Alert, Stay Alive?
Surely we need a slogan that represents a contemporary vision, a vision of global culture, and a reflection of the state’s appeal to tourists as the best place in Australia for live music.
Shouldn’t we, as Victorians, have a say in how our state is represented through such a ubiquitous display?
We believe so. We want the new state government to cement their commitment to our live music scene and create a positive message that Victorians can be proud of, by changing Victoria’s number plate slogan to Victoria - The Live Music State.
If you would be proud to see this slogan carried on cars throughout the state, please sign the petition to show your support. And please help us spread the word. The more signatures we get, the greater chance we have of being heard by Premier Andrews so we can create a positive, inspiring message to Victoria’s visitors and locals alike.
