Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian Canadian physician, teacher and an internationally recognized human rights and inspirational peace activist devoted to advancing health and education opportunities for women and girls in the Middle East. , He is known as the “Gaza Doctor” who has dedicated his life to using health as a vehicle for peace.
During the conflict, much of the world, including Canada, watched helplessly. The assault on Gaza in Gaza resulted in his three daughters and niece being killed when an Israeli tank shelled his home.
Dr. Abuelaish recalls, "We are standing in the scene of the tragedy, in the place where four lovely girls were sitting, building their dreams and their hopes, and in seconds, these dreams were killed.”
Since this tragedy, Dr. Abuelaish has worked hard to promote reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians. Following Dr. Abuelaish relocation to Canada, he told his story in his book “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity”.
In 2010 Dr. Abuelaish commenced a civil action involving the Israeli government for a formal apology for this tragedy. According to Dr. Abuelaish it’s about people and their lives, not politics”. The trial will be heard in March, 2017 in Israel and all funds awarded as a result will be directed to the Daughters for Life Foundation, a registered Canadian Charity established in memory of Dr. Abuelaish three daughters and niece.
We, the undersigned, agree and support the request of Dr Abuelaish that the Government of Israel take responsibility for this tragedy.
We also ask that Government of Canada send a letter of support to the Government of Israel supporting Dr. Abuelaish’s request for an apology in his civil action involving the Government of Israel.
