In my show, Don't Stop the Music, I gave Year 5 pupils from St Teresa's primary school in Basildon the opportunity to learn an instrument, many for the first time. The effect on the children was moving and inspiring – and judging by how many of you signed my petition, you were inspired too. A good music education and the opportunity to learn an instrument is supposed to be a promise for all children in England. Whilst there’s some fantastic work in some primary schools, thousands of children are still missing out. It’s becoming a lottery This can’t go on. We need action now – and I need your help. Many of you have told me how you were inspired to learn instruments, and were supported by incredible teachers. Music has changed your lives, just as it changed mine. Lots of you remember what it was like to pick up an instrument for the first time. The joy it gave you to be able to make a sound, just like the children of St Teresa’s. Some of you have even made music your career by playing or teaching. We need to ensure those opportunities are passed on to our children. You've signed my petition. Now let’s make some noise for music in schools! Thousands of you have told me why music is so important to you – now we’d love you to tell the world. You can share those incredible stories on Facebook and Twitter using #DontStopTheMusic.
