The dress code at Toby Johnson mainly targets the young females of the middle school. It teaches the girls to cover themselves for the reassurance that their male peers will remain comfortable or calm and that in reality they do not have control over what they can wear.

Well first, the dress code must be annihilated accordingly. Then we must teach, practically preach to boys that women are not objects and that they must treat every single woman with the utmost respect, regardless of what they are wearing and to focus on their face and what they’re saying and nowhere else. Teach boys that we are not meant for them to stare at and think of us as objects or pieces of meat. Instead, teach them that women are just as strong, and we can do just as much plus other things and that when we’re moody, it’s not because we’re “on our periods”, but because they have clearly upset us and that it’s a problem within themselves. It is not a “hormonal” thing that only occurs in men. It’s society. Stop giving boys slack for acting out because then you teach girls that it is unacceptable for them to act out and that they are just supposed to sit still, look pretty, and watch as boys will get away with all these things that girls would get shamed for. This leads girls to have mental illnesses and insecurities and all of this is normalized for some strange reason. It’s the 21st century. I think it’s about time we have some justice for females and their choices, don’t you?

I know many people that have been dress coded at Toby Johnson Middle School, all of them girls. They all have been for absurd, not reasonable, or irrational reasons such as, the hole revealed too much of a girls thigh, or their bra strap was showing, or their shorts were too short even though it met the requirement of mid-thigh. The gitls that I did know were always upset because they also saw no reason for themselves to be dress coded. We would spend our lunch contemplating the situation as to what and where it went wrong and each reason seemed completely illogical that we would all be left in a circle of fury, each yelling simultaneously just how stupid we thought it was and how boys are never effected by it. Even girls we didn’t know would come and say things as well or we would see other girls seeming angry and distraught. Girls have to constantly cover up and conceal themselves, and for what? It does not help anyone. Why should the opinions of middle aged men and women be in control of what students wear to school? They should be able to express themselves any way they want, wether that is by their clothes, their hair, or their voice. We are between the ages of 12-15, so why is the school making such a big deal as to what we wear? Students go to school to learn, not to stress about what they wear and how it will affect others. We should keep the school a learning environment.
