Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists(IADVL), the largest representative body of Dermatologists in India has come forward to support this cause. A new taskforce was formed and was named IADVL Task Force Against Topical Steroid Abuse (ITATSA). It was notified as below Dear IADVL Friends, Topical corticosteroids are probably the most important topical agents in our therapeutic armamentarium. However, as you are no doubt aware, we are facing incidences of their misuse with alarming and increasing frequency. Corticosteroids have developed a reputation as a “quick-fix” for any kind of rash and even more dangerously, as instant fairness creams. Their misuse in the groin region as single agents and in various dangerous and irrational combinations is equally if not more widespread. A big part of this problem is the uninhibited approval by the authorities of all sorts of irrational combinations of potent steroids with all manner of antimicrobials. An almost equally big aspect is the free availability of even the most potent steroids without any prescription at every chemist shop in the country. Our Association has been trying to combat the menace of the misuse of topical corticosteroids at multiple levels for many years now. A large nationwide study on topical corticosteroid abuse on the face has been conducted by a group of interested members and published in our journal in 2011. This was a part of our effort to understand and highlight this growing problem and generate solid data to support our claims as to the breadth and depth of the problem. Even before this study, office bearers of our association had made efforts to highlight this problem to the highest echelons of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. To give our hitherto rather scattered efforts in this direction a strong push, our President Dr. Deepak Parikh has decided to constitute a task force tentatively called the IADVL Task Force Against Topical Steroid Abuse (ITATSA) under Dr. Koushik Lahiri as the chairperson and Dr Abir Saraswat as the Convener . It is our pleasure to invite each of you to be a member of this task force in view of your expertise and interest in this subject. We hope that you will contribute to your utmost in ideas and action towards this socially important cause and help us curb this growing menace. Please do send your consent and confirmation for the same. Regards, Dr Rashmi Sarkar,MD,MNAMS Hony.
