Please undertake an Independent Inquiry into MFAT's actions and communications in relation to the Malaysian diplomat who was arrested and charged with serious offences in NZ.

The Issue

This is important because the events that took place were distressing for the victim involved. Being told that she may not get justice in NZ and may be summonsed to travel to Malaysia to give evidence. Not even knowing whether the accussed would face any trial regarding what happened. What has played out in the media would have revictimised her.

This is important because the actions and poor communication in MFAT suggest there is a significant break down between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Executive, and Management within the department. This is an important department that has a significant role in NZ's international reputation. On this occasion what has occurred has undermined not only undermined MFAT's reputation, but our countrys reputation and potentially damaged our relationship with the Malaysian people and government.

An independent inquiry should be undertaken because comments made in the media by the Minister and Prime Minister suggest that the process of fairness and natural justice will not be followed in regards to an inquiry - instead that the purpose of an inquiry is to find an official who may have made a mistake and fire them. The comments in the media from the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs do not suggest they are interested in finding out what went wrong and why nor do they appear to be focused on getting to the root cause of the problem - which was a Minister and Chief Executive knowing nothing about a significant incident, doing nothing, and then releasing contradictory information to the public and media.

The people of New Zealand and moreso the Victim in this case deserve to know that this type of incident will never happen again. That is why an Independent Inquiry by the Office of the Auditor General is required to examine what went wrong and how that can be avoided from ever happening again.
