Caregiver support matters.

Veterans deserve the benefits and care they earned — medical, dental, home health, hospice, and end-of-life support. But we also need to talk about the spouses, children, and family caregivers who are carrying so much behind the scenes.

Many caregivers step in because the system falls short, because their loved one wants family by their side, or because there are simply no other real options. Some do this work for months. Some for years. Many give up jobs, sleep, income, routines, and parts of themselves just to keep their veteran safe, clean, fed, comforted, and cared for.

Caregiving can be:
• physically exhausting
• emotionally overwhelming
• mentally draining
• financially stressful
• incredibly lonely

If you are caring for a veteran, please know this: you are not invisible, and you are not alone.

Please reach out to the VA Caregiver Support Program. Ask questions. Learn what resources are available. Apply for support. Use respite care, home health, hospice, and any help you can access. You do not have to carry all of this by yourself.

And to medical teams — VA, home health, and hospice alike — please remember that caregivers are often running on empty. A little more patience, compassion, education, and respect can make a world of difference.

Caregivers need support too.

It is an honor to care for those we love. The burden is not the veteran — it is trying to carry so much without enough support.
