Give us more space for Ballaarat Park not more parking spaces in Pyrmont

The issue

Pyrmont is Australia's most densely populated suburb and one of the largest employment centres in NSW following a massive and successful state led urban renewal project. We desperately need additional open space on our peninsula.

As the state government prepares to transfer control of the last remaining land in Pyrmont at Darling Island to the City of Sydney, we call on the state and city governments to work collaboratively to expand the precinct's available waterfront parkland by removing the roads which adjoin Ballaarat Park.

Locals need space for parks not parking spaces. The local roads bordering Ballaarat Park are empty during the day. At night our local streets are descended upon by visitors to the nearby casino in search of parking spots. Hoons drag race down our quiet residential streets.

Following the recent billion dollar redevelopment of the Star, the main entrace to the casino was moved to the Darling Island side of the buidling. At the same time, new lock out laws in Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and the CBD have intensified late night visitions to the Star, which is exempt from late night trading restrictions. We are losing sleep here in Pyrmont.

Residents are requesting that the roads adjoining Ballaarat Park be replaced with grass and trees, thus increasing the park by sixty percent while substantially decreasing the impact of the Star on our local amenities. Removing the local roads around the existing park would have no impact on local traffic flow and access to the waterfront for emergency vehicles could be accommodated in a redesigned park.

Over the last two decades Pyrmont has improved substantially. We appreciate the visionary efforts of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to transform a semi dilapidated industrial area into one of Sydney's most spectacular suburbs. At the same time we praise the City of Sydney and Lord Mayor Clover Moore for championing additional open space and waterfront parkland in our neighbourhood. The City's efforts at Pirrama Park have been appreciated by locals who would like to see additional waterfront parkland at Ballaarat Park as well.

We call on local and state government bodies to work together jointly to remove the existing asphalt around Ballaarat Park, thus substantially increasing the size of a much needed waterfront park in Pyrmont for the benefit of local residents, workers and vistors alike. Please support our campaign and add your name to our petition.
