A Chute to Africa

A Chute to Africa

The Issue

When I was a high school freshman, my English Teacher asked me this question – “If you had no limitations, and could create anything, what would it be?” My selfish butt immediately drew up plans for a calculator that could take pictures of my math homework and give me the answers. But when she was asked the same question, her answer rang in my ears loud enough that I still remember it today. “If I could make anything I wanted, I’d make a chute to Africa, so all my things I don’t need anymore could go to people who really needed them and wouldn’t end up in the trash.”

While we may not be able to build a system of chutes and analytical computers through the core of the earth that can distribute our used things to the people who really need them; we may be able to connect everyone together in a more realistic way. A donation collection service could put a large dent in many of the problems our world faces today, including poverty, high amounts of trash production, and negative environmental impact.

In order to make this happen, I talked to a man who was a City of Dayton Waste Management Supervisor. This kind gentleman estimated that to do an extra collection service – like the one I am proposing – for one day cost around $50,000. So let’s break this down. Based off of the data I collected from a survey I conducted...the price of this service will be about $23.60 per person. That. Is. MIND BLOWING to me. $23.60 PER PERSON is all it would take to help save the world and clothe people’s children? It’s a no brainer in my opinion.

So then I thought to myself -- Lets do it. So let's make this happen. By signing below you are taking one step towards saving the planet, and decreasing poverty in your area. Let's do it together. I thank you for taking the time to help me change the world; and so does our beautiful earth.
