Add additional lighting around west campus for the safety of students

It is no secret that there have been multiple tragedies around campus at the University of Texas at Austin in the past few years, due to random acts of violence. Other violent acts, such as sexual assaults, have occurred as well. As a female living on west campus, it is impossible to ignore the lack of lighting around west campus. Places such as the Callaway House and Castilian house hundreds of UT students, yet late at night the areas around these dorms are extremely dark. The safety of students should be a priority to UT and the city of Austin, and the fact that areas around West Campus are not on UT property should not deter the university from getting involved in adding additional lighting. Adding additional lighting could deter crimes ranging from petty theft to even murder, and would in general put a lot of students at ease. While the University has taken measures to add more lightening on campus, following the death of Haruka Weiser in 2016, there is still much improvement needed around campus. Creating apps and programs like SUREwalk are helpful, but if students are unaware or unable to use those programs, additional lighting is the best option.
