Camels are banned in the state of Karnataka. We wish to impress you to immediately stop the camels from slaughter and recreation purpose.
The Issue
We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the Karnataka High Court has declared a ban on entry of Camels into the state, from 2006. Camel meat is not notified an item of food and use of camels for entertainment or slaughter contravenes the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, and the Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act of 1959.
1) A circular was issued by the Commissioner Animal Husbandry and Veterinary services, No DVD -05, E-04, viva 436:2002- 03, dt 31-05-2006.
2) Endorsement No. L & O, Misc: 52:2009, dt 12-08-2009 of the offices of Director General and Inspector General of Police, Karnataka
3) A court order, WP 1330/ 2005 of the High Court of Karnataka specifically directing the Chief Secretary and Animal Husbandry Secretary to enforce the said legislation.
Inspite of the rules having been in force for nearly a decade, there is no will on the part of the administration to enforce the law, as can be seen from the recent photographs attached below. Fifteen camels have been sighted in Shivajinagar area in the past three days alone.
We would like a response from the administration stating the reasons for their continued failure.
