"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." - Rev.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I think it's pretty safe to share the other half of what's also been going on the last couple of weeks. We've been pretty quiet about it but shortly after the failed referendum on same-sex marriages and civil unions in Bermuda, we were contacted, asked if we wanted to be the first same-sex couple married in Bermuda. After thinking about it for a bit, the answer was fairly simple! How could you not want to fight for something as monumental as that!? It's a fight so much bigger than us. We could easily do it here in Canada but it wouldn't be recognized in a place that I call home. I should be afforded the same opportunities and benefits as anyone else under the law.
The case itself is a bit confusing, but as it currently stands, we submitted our intent to marry which as expected, was denied. We plan on filing a case that it goes against he human rights act, which states you cannot discriminate against anyone based on being a same-sex couple (an amendment made in 2013). Sadly, this Friday, the Bermudian Government, voted to amend the amendment, essentially banning same-sex couples from getting married and effectively stating that the Marriage Act in Bermuda hold more importance than the Human Rights Act.
The next little while is going to be difficult, but I still have faith. This is far less a religious issue and more of an issue based on human rights. Bermuda it's time, let's make happen!
