Warning..Some people may be triggered..
As I sit here with her snuggled up next to me I am reassured she is happy and as we sit here in silence, she quietly says “nanny” and I say “what” and she just looks up at me and smiles..
This child is one of two scenarios of a department of child protection outcome.. She lives safely with us, her nan and pop and is loved unconditionally by all around her and we get to hold her tight in our arms every single day ..
Then there is our two precious little angel grandchildren that are now forever in heaven with their mummy. ..
They were left with adults that were struggling with mental health and addiction, even though many mandatory notifications were reported to our department of child protection by professionals that were in the children’s lives ..In fact they were the only ones who had this information as the family that loved them the most were kept in the dark..so these two beautiful little 5 and 6 year olds were ignored by authorities and were murdered by their mums new boyfriend.
I look at this little cutie every day and with tears in my eyes and I wonder why, why didn’t they follow the same policies and procedures and allow us to save the other two, why are they allowed to make decisions that also abuse our children and most of all, why are they not held accountable when a coroner has claimed that their deaths were preventable .. I would give anything to be able to hold them in my arms again ,to hear their little footsteps running up my hallway and screaming nanny, poppy we are here..
In the last couple of weeks the media have reported on stories concerning vulnerable children who have been let down, by not only their parents but also the departments that are put in place to fulfill an obligation to help protect our innocent children..
This post is to acknowledge and thank all the family members, kinship carers, foster carers and community members that are out there stepping up and loving these children, raising these children and keeping them safe when their parents are struggling for what ever reason ..
We cannot rely on our Child protection Department to make the right decisions for our most vulnerable children
