Children are placed with kinship carers often at short notice and with no forewarning. We do an amazing job navigating a difficult system, negotiating with impossible biological relatives, and providing safety and security to vulnerable children. All with little to no support nor any recognition.
Sometimes these carers require help with the trauma and medical issues the children in their care present with. The natural progression would be to ask for help, however this is now being shown to be the worst possible action the carer can take.
Many carers who have recently asked for help (Australia wide) have had their children -some whom have been in their care for many years- removed from their care and placed with foster carers or in residential units. How is this in the best interests of the child?
Once in foster care or residential units, hundreds of thousands of dollars are thrown to the service to provide accommodation, medical, psychological, occupational therapy etc for the children.
Does anyone else see the absurdity in this?
"We cant afford to support a kinship carer get the help they need maintain the home the child feels safe in, but lets remove them, place them in a foreign environment, cause more trauma to the child and the carer and throw much more financial support to these people than what would have been required in the first place.
The system as it is is not only broken but it is causing harm to those it is designed to protect.
Please keep sharing our petition and asking people to sign. Don't make these children the victims of apathy. Thank you to all those who have already shared and signed.
