Elections are being held across Europe today for the European Parliament. Go out and have your say!

Check out our video on the voting system used in the European Elections

European Parliament elections in the UK are held under a basic form of Proportional Representation (PR).

Under this system, you vote for your favourite party, rather than individual candidates. Seats match votes but not very closely, meaning that bigger parties usually win more MEPs than we voted to give them, and smaller parties get fewer. But even the worst form of PR is about a gazillion times better than First Past the Post.

With First Past the Post, many people choose to vote tactically. The form of PR we are using for European Elections isn't perfect but it does make it far less likely that your vote will be wasted. Many people who were advocating tactical voting in the general election are advising against it for the EU election.

This could be the last time for a while that many of us vote in an election where our votes aren't wasted... at least until we make all votes matter for general elections!

You can find out where your polling station is here, polls are open from 7am to 10pm. Make sure you use this opportunity to have your voice heard!
