At 5pm today, Saturday 3rd October, tweet with our hash tag #AVisnotPR and push the issue of electoral reform up the agenda.
Over the past few weeks, we have been contacting MPs to find out whether they support changing our voting system to make it more fair and proportional.
Unfortunately, some MPs replies have been less than impressive.
Many of those opposed to electoral reform resorted to using standard templates, almost all included one phrase:
"The British electorate overwhelmingly voted to retain FPTP in 2011 and I believe this was the right decision."
This argument makes no sense at all.
Firstly, in the 2011 AV referendum, voters voted to reject AV. This was not an endorsement of FPTP. AV is explained here: http://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/alternative-vote/
Secondly, AV is not a more proportional system. In fact, in many cases it is less proportional than First Past the Post.
Thirdly, the AV referendum was four years ago. Since then there has been a surge in support for electoral reform. The 2015 general election was the most disproportionate in British history and now people want a fairer and more proportional system.
We need to teach politicians that AV is not the same as PR and that we want a fairer system.
To do this, please join us on Saturday 3rd October at 5pm by tweeting #AVisnotPR to get the topic trending.
