Last week was quite eventful. Another fire erupted, this time closing off Quadra street for sometime, much like McKenzie had been blocked off for a structure fire only very recently. The fire is a sign of how bad too much density in the Quadra/McKenzie area can be. Imagine if there were a series of buildings like this in the works, clustered together. A devastating fire storm would be a real possibility.

There is good news though. A new and very professional website: Save Our Saanich has sprung up to offer a centre of resistance to the Quadra and McKenzie plan, and it has launched a petition to stop the plan:

I disagree with the following verbiage in the petition: "We understand growth must occur". My disagreement with this line is on the philosophical basis that it is a non sequitur ('it doesn't necessarily follow'), it denies free will, and can be a double-edged sword, as community support for increased density can be turned around by politicians, lobbyists, and planners as justification for this type of planning, as has been seen before.
However, I fully agree with the rest of the petition and encourage you to check it out:
"However, growth should not result in the destruction of our homes, our neighbourhoods and the Saanich we love. Check out this Plan's impact of the proposed drastically increased density at www.SaveOurSaanich.com"
So many thanks to the community members that have bravely put forward and put a lot of work into this crucial initiative that many have been hoping for, may it lead to a much desired halt in this reckless plan!
